Why Use Lye in Soap?

Food-grade sodium hydroxide is a strong alkaline compound that is used for the process of saponifying soap; it is used in food processing like curing olives, and toothpaste, and giving shine to German Bagels. It is this same lye, that turns oils into soap. When an acid and a base (oil/fat) combine they neutralize each other and make a paste-like salt called “Soap”.

Sodium hydroxide is also used in food prep; for example in chemical peeling of fruits and vegetables (olives are softened too), chocolate and cocoa processing, caramel coloring production, poultry scalding, soft drink processing, and thickening ice cream. Pretzels and German rolls lye rolls are glazed with a sodium hydroxide solution before baking to make them crisp.

What are Organic products, and is Soaps Creams & Things organic?

Organic material is either food or herb sources that do not use pesticides, but it takes it a step further. Herbs that are considered Organic, must be certified that the 'seeds' are Non-GMO seeds. Depending on the botanical plant, some organic plants that are seedlings (young plants) have stronger properties. When plants mature they tend to lose some potency in the same way humans age. This does not equate to a lesser plant with less potency, it just means that a much younger plant is stronger because of its age.

Soaps Creams & Things sources ingredients that are organic when possible. Many countries have different standards of what organic is. If the organic standard does not come close to the USA Food and Drug Administration, then we use ingredients that are ensured to be of the highest quality during the harvesting season.
